"I'll never forget the radiant smile of a young girl named Zangue...", Dr. Beckely shares his experience during the Medical Mission Trip to Messamena

In August 2024, we were providing free of charge medical care in the remote community of Messamena in the Eastern Region of Cameroon with Eden Global Missions. A young girl called Zangue Delphine, aged 19, came into my consultation office presenting frank signs of epilepsy. She had been hiding herself for years under the pretext that the disease was spiritual and she was under a curse.

Our team worked together to counsel her and make her realize that just as someone can have recurrent headaches, so is her condition. Even without much to give her, she felt less burdened and had a smile on her face as she left limping. As we finished consulting and preaching, Zangue looked up at me with tears in her eyes and whispered, 'Merci' (thank you), with two cards of Phenobarbital tablets in her hand... But what happened next left me speechless. Zangue's mother, who had been watching from the sidelines, approached us and began to sing a soft, melodious song. Our consultation team stopped what they were doing, mesmerized by her activism and gratitude. As she sang, her mother's eyes locked onto mine, and I felt a deep sense of connection. At that moment, language barriers disappeared, and we shared a common humanity. After the song, her mother hugged me tightly and said, 'You have given me hope for my daughter's healing.'

I realized that our medical care was not just about obtaining drugs but also about bringing hope and dignity to those we served. Zangue's smile and her mother's song remain etched in my heart, reminding me of the transformative power of compassion and kindness in medical missions."
