Teddy is no longer just surviving—he is dreaming...

Hi! My name is Mbah Lois, a medical student at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Bamenda, Cameroon and a Program Officer at Eden Global Missions. For the last few years, I’ve had the privilege of working with Eden Global Missions through the Eden Scholarship for Rural Kids Project. Through this project, we’ve supported seven amazing children so far in Batouri, East Cameroon, and it’s an honor to share the powerful story of one of them—an 8-year-old boy whose life is being quietly transformed.

Teddy is a dark-skinned, bright-eyed Cameroonian boy with a slim build and a curious smile. Born in the peaceful town of Batouri, in Cameroon’s East Region—often called the land of the rising sun—he came into the world under incredibly difficult circumstances.

His young mother was still a teenager when she became pregnant. The father denied responsibility, leaving her to face the pregnancy alone. Already from a poor family that had lost their own father, she had no choice but to drop out of school. Life became a daily struggle just to survive. When the time came to give birth, she discovered she was carrying twins. The babies arrived prematurely, a situation that is both delicate and expensive in Cameroon.

Without the funds for proper medical care, the young mother was sent home from the hospital. She kept her fragile newborns alive using traditional methods—warming them with bottles of hot water and whatever simple remedies she could find. The twins soon developed serious infections, common and often life-threatening for premature babies. Repeated hospital visits brought no lasting solution because she couldn’t afford the treatment. Back home, she continued with risky traditional care, knowing each day carried the danger of infection, complications, or even loss.

Miraculously, both boys survived those fragile early months. But the cost was heavy: their mother had to abandon her education entirely. With no father figure and limited support from her own struggling family, she single-handedly raised the twins while trying to make ends meet.

We first met Teddy at École Espoir of the Full Gospel Mission in Batouri, Cameroon. The headmistress saw his potential and recommended him for our scholarship program. What we discovered was a child full of promise—but also a family stretched to its limits. His mother had tried to return to school while leaving the children with their grandmother, but the arrangement didn’t work. The boys struggled, and she had to drop out again to care for them.

For the past two years, our support has changed the trajectory of this little family. Teddy now attends school regularly with all the necessary materials covered. With consistent encouragement, guidance, and monthly check-ins from the Eden team, his academic performance has soared. In just the first month, his average jumped from 11/20 to 14/20. Today, he proudly maintains a strong 14 to 15 out of 20, thriving in class and regaining the confidence every child deserves.

His mother has also been empowered. Through our counseling sessions on parenting, sacrifice, and family responsibility, she gained new hope and practical advice. She has since started a small business to support her children—something she never imagined possible before. She no longer feels completely alone in her journey. The worry lines on her face have softened, replaced by visible joy and pride whenever she talks about Teddy’s progress.

Teddy is no longer just surviving—he is dreaming. His mother now believes she can raise strong, educated children even without having finished school herself. The scholarship has given this young family stability, hope, and a real chance to break the cycle of hardship. Seeing the sparkle in Teddy’s eyes when he talks about school, and the grateful smile on his mother’s face during our meetings, fills me with deep satisfaction. This is why we do what we do.
